It was a long night of watching him appear in the security camera we set up and adjusting our attempts to his accute hearing to get the door to the third floor closed while he tried to slip down to his usual eating spot. He had been hiding in the third floor for three weeks, likely hiding in the wall crawl space or in the insulation between the floors. Thankfully Emily's great friend and cat watcher, Brian, told us where he'd likely be, if we could keep him out of the third floor. Sure enough, that's where we found him in the morning.
Poor guy was pretty scared and extremely motivated to not get captured and into the cat carrier. One of Emily's friends, Kay Bea, said it well, "Spot doesn't do what Spot doesn't want to do." Except, this time my will to get him to a new home wouldn't be matched, afterall, I am a bit bigger and was better armed, I found some winter gloves and a winter coat.
Was not loving the attention.
Arriving to his new home after the long drive.
Moo was going to take the first shift watching over his door. I'm pretty sure she told him the food is good, but there's never enough.
On Spot's first morning, he found one of the many hiding places we gave him and parked himself way in the back.
After a few days, he finally found one of the more comfortable hiding spots we gave him. It may not seem like it, but I've seen a lot of growth over the last month. At first when I would enter the room or make any sort of unusual noise, like moving the litter box, he would retreat deeper into the igloo. Now when I come and go, he leans out a bit to watch what's happening. I even recently found him up in the bay window! Huge growth for Spot. I've got some treats and fresh cat nip up in the window now, so should he find himself up there again, he'll get a little reward.
The girls have been pretty interested in Spot ever since his arrival. They "helped" me build a screen door. Now they can really get a good smell of the new guy.
We hope it helps so he's not so isolated in his room and can adjust to the comings and goings of the house and all the noise with three cats, a dog, a teenager, and us.
Moo probably just wants his food. And Leah's pretty sure they're already in love. If only she could just get in there to works her magic on him.
After a few days of the screen door in place, I let the girls in to see if Spot would be interested in meeting them. He was still pretty hesitant, so we'll give it a while longer. And we'll wait until he gets a clean bill of health from his first ever vet check at the end of November.
Week of November 5 we've discovered him in the window more often. Makes me happy he's moving about and getting a view of the big world outside his bay window.
The O.G. cat of the house: Vader.
AKA Your Highness.
Cool, calm, always chill.
Owns every room he walks into and is quite spoiled.
Has no current interest in meeting Spot. But if it keeps the others out of his grill he's good with that.
Moo aka Moo Beans
Hobbies are eating, eating, and also finding boxes for naps. Will nap without a box. But, definitely prefers boxes and hiding-holes/forts of all kinds. And "outside times" to snack on grass.
She's excited to meet Spot, or at least ask if he'll share his food.
Leah aka Meepers
Doesn't meow, meeps instead. OCD and ADHD. Wants every door open all the time, will claw them open if she can. She's sweet and hyperactive and always a little scattered.
She'll wiggle her way into being loved by everyone, then will try to hug your ankle or bite your toe just to tell you how much she loves you, and she loves you a lot.
Leah is Spot's biggest fan girl. She's pretty sure they'll be married one day, if only we'd just let her meet him.
Brian. AKA Bestest Boy
He's just a good boy. He and Vades are pretty chill, probably because Vader doesn't take up too much of his space and they go wayyy back, when life was simpler. Otherwise, he'd prefer to be an only dog and get all the pets for himself.
But he is a softie; Leah has wiggled her way into being tolerated by him when she wants to snuggle.
